Office tools for the writing, planning and spreadsheets that fill a working week

Most of a working day goes on documents that need to be right rather than clever. The letter and HR tools are written for UK workplaces: the Business Letter & Memo Generator lays out a letter or internal memo properly, the Resignation Letter Generator works out your last day from your notice period, and the Disciplinary Warning Letter Generator follows the Acas Code of Practice, including the right to appeal. For recruiting there’s the Job Description & Advert Builder, which flags wording that could put candidates off, and the Employee Onboarding Checklist Generator for a new starter’s first months.

Meetings get a set of their own. Plan with the Meeting Agenda Builder, find a slot everyone can make with the Meeting Time Finder, and record what happened in the Meeting Minutes Template, whose actions can go straight into the Action Item & Task List Formatter. The Meeting Cost Calculator puts a price on the hour, and the Decision Log keeps track of what was agreed and why. To rehearse a presentation, the Presentation Timer counts down each section and shows afterwards where you ran over.

For spreadsheets you didn’t build yourself, Explain This Spreadsheet shows how an Excel workbook fits together and flags hidden sheets, broken links and overwritten formulas, while the Spreadsheet Formula Explainer turns any formula into a plain-English sentence. Explain This Document does a similar job for Word files, and Turn This Text Into a Table rescues tables that arrive as messy text. The Timesheet Calculator with Rounding and the Expense Claim Form Builder handle hours and mileage at current UK rates. Every tool runs in your browser, and files you open are never uploaded.

Questions and answers

Are the files I open in Explain This Document or Explain This Spreadsheet uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is opened and read by your own browser, and nothing is sent to a server, so it’s safe to use on confidential documents. Both tools read the newer Word and Excel formats (.docx and .xlsx). For an older .doc or .xls file, open it in Word or Excel and use Save As first.
What’s the difference between Explain This Spreadsheet and the Spreadsheet Formula Explainer?
Explain This Spreadsheet gives an overview of a whole workbook: what each sheet holds, how the sheets connect, its tables and named ranges, and warnings such as hidden sheets or a typed-in number where a formula should be. The Spreadsheet Formula Explainer goes formula by formula, rewriting each one as a sentence, and also works on a single formula you paste in without any file.
Should I use the Meeting Minutes Template or the Action Item & Task List Formatter?
Use the minutes template for the formal record of a meeting: who attended, what was discussed and decided, and the actions agreed. Use the action item formatter when all you need is a clear list of who’s doing what by when, for example from rough notes or a chat thread. It understands due dates written as “Friday” or “31 Oct”.
Which rates do the Timesheet Calculator and the Expense Claim Form Builder use?
The timesheet calculator checks pay against the National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage rates from April 2026. The expense claim builder uses HMRC’s approved mileage rates: 45p a mile for cars and vans for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year and 25p after that, 24p for motorcycles, 20p for bicycles and 5p per passenger.
Is the Disciplinary Warning Letter Generator enough to run a fair disciplinary process?
It produces a letter that follows the Acas Code of Practice, setting out the problem, the improvement expected, how long the warning lasts and the right of appeal. The letter is only one step, though: a fair process also needs an investigation and a meeting at which the employee can bring a companion. If the case could lead to dismissal, take advice from Acas or a solicitor.
