Free Word, PDF and PowerPoint tools that keep your files private
Office files often hold things you'd rather not upload to a stranger's server: contracts, payroll letters, client decks. Every tool here opens your file inside your browser and works on it there. For PDFs, the PDF Page Extractor / Splitter pulls out the pages you need or splits a long document into parts, the PDF Page Reorder / Delete Tool lets you drag pages into order, rotate them and drop the blank ones while you see thumbnails, and the PDF Watermark Adder stamps DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL across every page. Before you send a protected file, the PDF Password-Protection Checker tells you whether it needs a password to open, how strong the encryption is and whether printing or copying is blocked.
For Word documents, Merge Multiple Word Documents into One keeps each file's pictures, numbered lists and landscape pages intact, Word Document Stats gives word counts, reading time and footnotes, and the Font/Style Consistency Checker finds the one paragraph pasted in the wrong font. The Document Metadata Viewer / Editor and Who Edited This File? show the names and company details hidden inside a file and help you remove them before it goes out.
PowerPoint users can pull speaker notes or every picture out of a deck in slide order, audit fonts and colours against the theme, and convert an old 4:3 deck to 16:9 without squashing the logos. To start something new, build a branded slide template, a chart slide from spreadsheet data, a business proposal with a priced VAT table, a UK NDA, or a batch of personalised letters with the Mail Merge Simulator. Writers can check how many pages an essay will fill, expand acronyms, number a table of contents or print lined, graph and music paper.
Questions and answers
- Are my files uploaded anywhere?
- No. Each tool reads your file with JavaScript in your browser and builds any download there too, so the file never leaves your device. The code libraries they use, such as pdf-lib and JSZip, are served from this site too, so nothing is fetched from anywhere else. Tools that remember your work, such as the proposal builder, save it in your browser's own storage on this device.
- What's the difference between the Document Metadata Viewer and Who Edited This File?
- The Metadata Viewer / Editor shows the document's properties (author, last modified by, company, title, dates) and lets you change or clear them and download a cleaned copy. Who Edited This File? is read-only and digs further: as well as the properties it lists everyone named in tracked changes and comments, and reads the author fields in PDFs. Use it to see what's there, then the Metadata Viewer to remove it.
- Should I use the PDF Page Extractor or the Reorder / Delete Tool?
- Use the Page Extractor / Splitter when you want some pages as a new file, or want to split a document every few pages or into named groups, downloaded as separate PDFs in a zip. Use the Reorder / Delete Tool when you want to keep one document but change it: move pages around, rotate sideways scans and delete pages, with a thumbnail of each page to work from.
- Will converting a deck from 4:3 to 16:9 distort my slides?
- Not with the default setting. The PowerPoint Aspect Ratio Converter scales everything by the same amount and centres it, so photos and logos keep their shape, and it moves shapes on the slide layouts and masters too, which is where most titles take their position from. The stretch option fills the wider slide exactly but squashes pictures, so it's only worth it for simple text slides.
- Can I use the NDA and proposal templates as they are?
- They give you a clear, well-structured starting point in Word, with UK wording, dates and VAT, which you can edit like any other document. They aren't legal or financial advice: read the NDA through and fill in anything still in [brackets], and for valuable deals or unusual terms ask a solicitor to check it before anyone signs.
