The short version
- The tools run in your browser. What you type into them, and the files you open, are not sent to our servers.
- There are no accounts, and we don't ask for your name, email address or any other personal details to use a tool.
- The site does not set cookies of its own.
- Some things are saved on your device (not ours) so tools can remember your entries and the homepage can show your favourites. You can remove them at any time.
- A handful of tools call an outside service to work. They are listed below.
What the tools do with your input
Text, numbers, files and settings you enter into a tool are processed by JavaScript in your own browser. They are not transmitted to us, and we cannot see them. The exceptions are the tools in the next section, which need an outside service.
Tools that use an outside service
A few Geo tools can ask another organisation’s service for an answer, so the information shown is sent to it. None of them contacts its service when the page opens: each waits until you press the button named below. Everything else these tools do, including searching the built-in lists of towns, airports and UK postcodes, happens in your browser.
| Tool | Service | What is sent | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP Geolocation | ipapi.co | Your own IP address if you leave the box empty, or the IP address you type | Only after you press Look up |
| Place Locator | OpenStreetMap Nominatim | The text in the search box | Only after you press Search OpenStreetMap |
| Distance Between UK Postcodes | postcodes.io | The postcodes in the boxes | Only after you press Use exact postcode locations |
| UK Postcode Reference | postcodes.io | The postcode in the box | Only after you press the online lookup button |
| Map Preview and other Geo tools with a map | OpenStreetMap | The area of the map, including any marker (a GPX file itself stays in your browser) | Only after you press Show on a map |
Like any website you visit, these services also see your IP address and browser details whenever your browser contacts them, and handle them under their own privacy policies. Links that open Google Maps, Apple Maps or OpenStreetMap in a new tab send the location when you follow them. Every other tool on the site works without contacting anyone.
What is saved on your device
This site does not use cookies for its own purposes. It does use your browser's local storage, which stays on your device and is not sent to us. It is used for:
| What | Why | How to remove it |
|---|---|---|
Tools You Use (edt.toolsYouUse.v1) | The names and addresses of tools you have used, how often, and when you last used them, so the homepage can show your recent and most-used tools. | Press Clear on the homepage's “Tools You Use” section, or clear this site's data in your browser. |
Tool data (keys starting everydaytools- and a few others) | Some tools keep your entries or settings so they are there next time, such as the Retail Tools logs, shift earnings, and best scores in some games. | Clear this site's data in your browser. Tools that keep data also offer Export and Import so you can keep your own copy. |
Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of the above. Private browsing windows usually discard it when they close.
Fonts
The site's typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser requests them from Google, which receives your IP address and browser details in the process. Google's privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.
Server logs
As with any website, the server that delivers these pages receives your IP address and details of the request (the page, the time and your browser type), and normally keeps them for a limited time in its logs to keep the site secure and running. We do not use them to identify or profile individual visitors.
Links to other sites
Some pages link to other websites, for example to documentation or references. Those sites have their own privacy practices, which this policy does not cover.
Children
The site is a general-purpose set of tools and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
Your rights
Because we do not collect the information you type, and do not hold accounts or contact details, there is very little personal information for us to hold. Under UK data protection law you nevertheless have the right to ask what personal data an organisation holds about you, to have it corrected or erased, and to object to how it is used. If you have a concern that you can't resolve with us, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes to this page
If how the site handles information changes, for example when a new tool needs an outside service, this page will be updated and the date at the top changed.
