Most date questions come down to counting, and counting dates by hand is where mistakes creep in. The Date Difference Calculator gives the exact years, months and days between two dates, and the Date Add/Subtract tool moves forward or back by any period, handling short months properly so 31 January plus one month is the end of February. The Age Calculator gives an exact age on any date, the Milestone Finder spots your 10,000th day, and the Countdown Timer ticks down to a holiday, wedding or launch.
For work, the Business Days Calculator counts or adds working days and skips bank holidays for England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, all built into the UK Bank Holidays lookup. The Working Hours Calculator totals contracted hours, the Notice Period Calculator tells you when to hand in notice, and the Fiscal Year Calculator knows the UK tax year starts on 6 April. The Week Number Calculator translates the ISO week numbers used in many workplaces, and the Recurring Date Generator and Date Sequence Generator produce lists of rent days, paydays or meetings ready to paste into a spreadsheet.
Then there are the calendar curiosities. Find Easter, Pancake Day and Mothering Sunday for any year, the exact time of the equinoxes and solstices, or tonight's moon phase. Convert to the Hebrew, Islamic, Persian or Chinese calendars with the Multi-Calendar Converter, decode a manufacturing date with the Julian Date Converter, or hunt for palindrome dates and the next Friday the 13th. When you just need paper, the Printable Calendar Generator makes a clean month to pin on the fridge.
Questions and answers
- Should I use the Date Difference Calculator or the Business Days Calculator?
- Use the Date Difference Calculator for calendar time: how long until a holiday, how many days between two events, or an exact gap in years, months and days. Use the Business Days Calculator when only working days count, such as for delivery times, payment terms or project deadlines. It leaves out weekends and the bank holidays for the part of the UK you choose, and it can also add a number of working days to a date.
- Why do the bank holidays differ for Scotland and Northern Ireland?
- Each part of the UK sets its own bank holidays. Scotland has 2 January and St Andrew's Day (30 November), takes its summer bank holiday on the first Monday of August rather than the last, and doesn't have Easter Monday as a bank holiday. Northern Ireland adds St Patrick's Day (17 March) and the Battle of the Boyne (12 July). The UK Bank Holidays lookup, Business Days Calculator and Working Hours Calculator all let you pick the region, and they include substitute days and one-off extra holidays such as the 2023 coronation.
- What's the difference between the Recurring Date Generator and the Date Sequence Generator?
- The Recurring Date Generator starts from one date and gives a set number of repeats, such as the next 12 monthly rent days or 26 fortnightly paydays. The Date Sequence Generator fills in everything between a start and an end date, either at a regular interval or on a chosen weekday, such as every Friday until Christmas. Both keep monthly dates on the right day, using the last day of shorter months when the start date is the 29th, 30th or 31st.
- Which Julian date do I need: the Julian Day Number or the ordinal date?
- If it's printed on food, a battery or a military document, it's almost certainly an ordinal date: the year followed by the day of the year, so 26166 is the 166th day of 2026. Astronomers mean something different: the Julian Day Number, a running count of days since 4713 BC that makes it easy to work out the gap between observations. The Julian Date Converter handles both, as well as the Modified Julian Date used for satellites.
- Why do the Easter, equinox and moon phase tools give different kinds of answer?
- Easter is fixed by the church's calculation, which uses tables rather than the real Moon, so its date is exact and agreed. The equinoxes and solstices are real astronomical moments, worked out to within a minute or two and shown in UK time. Moon phases are astronomical too, but a phase name such as "full moon" covers a day or so either side of the exact moment, which is why the Moon Phase Calculator also gives the precise times of the next new, first-quarter, full and last-quarter moons.
