Plan, pack and budget for your trip, and avoid the surprises

Start with the paperwork. The Passport Validity Checker tests a UK passport against the EU’s 10-year and 3-month rules, a 6-month rule or any rule you set, and tells you the last trip it’s good for. The Travel Document Checklist lists what to sort out for Europe, Ireland, the USA or further afield, from the Entry/Exit System and ESTA to driving abroad, children, pets and medicines, and remembers what you’ve ticked.

Flying? The Hand Luggage Size Checker shows whether your bag goes free under the seat or as a cabin bag on 11 airlines, the Hand Luggage Liquids Checker checks your toiletries against the 100 ml or 2-litre rule at your airport, and the Connection Time Checker adds up every step of a change of planes. Weigh up fares on their true cost, with bags, fees and journey times, in the Flight Price Comparison, and get ahead of a long-haul body clock with the Jet Lag Planner.

For the money side, the Holiday Budget Planner turns what’s left after flights and accommodation into spending money per day and per person, the Hotel Price Calculator adds the tax, resort fees and tourist tax that headline prices leave out, and the Airport Parking Cost Comparator ranks your parking quotes for your exact times. Compare cover rather than just price with the Travel Insurance Quote Comparison, find the cheapest data abroad with the Roaming vs eSIM Cost Comparator, and see whether a reward flight is a good use of your Avios with the Points & Miles Value Calculator.

Travelling together or by road? The Group Holiday Cost Splitter keeps track of who paid for what and settles up in the fewest payments, the Road Trip Fuel Cost Calculator works out the fuel or charging cost of a drive from your car’s mpg or miles per kWh, and the Packing List Generator builds a checklist for the trip you’re taking. Every tool works in your browser and saves your details on your device, so nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions and answers

My UK passport doesn’t expire for a year. Why might it not be valid for Europe?
For EU countries (other than Ireland) a UK passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the day you arrive, as well as being valid for 3 months after the day you leave. Passports renewed before September 2018 could carry up to nine extra months, so the issue date can be the problem rather than the expiry date. The Passport Validity Checker tests both.
Do I need ETIAS to visit Europe yet?
Not yet. The Entry/Exit System, which takes your fingerprints and photo at the border, is now running, but ETIAS, the €20 travel authorisation, isn’t expected to start until late 2026 at the earliest. When it does, apply only through the official EU website. The Travel Document Checklist covers both.
What’s the difference between the Hand Luggage Size Checker and the Liquids Checker?
The Hand Luggage Size Checker is about the bag: whether its size and weight fit each airline’s free under-seat bag or paid cabin bag. The Hand Luggage Liquids Checker is about what’s inside it: whether your toiletries meet the security rule at your airport, which is either 100 ml containers in a one-litre bag or containers of up to 2 litres.
Is a roaming pass or a travel eSIM cheaper?
It depends on how many days you’ll use your phone and how much data you need. A daily roaming pass is simple and uses your home allowance, but adds up on a long trip; an eSIM bundle is often cheaper for a week or more if your phone supports it. The Roaming vs eSIM Cost Comparator estimates your data use and prices each option for your trip.
Should I use the Holiday Budget Planner or the Group Holiday Cost Splitter?
Use the Holiday Budget Planner before you go, to work out how much you can spend each day. Use the Group Holiday Cost Splitter during and after the trip, to record what each person actually paid and work out who owes who.
