Text tools for writers, editors, students and developers

Whatever you're writing, there's a quick tool here to check it. The Word & Character Counter keeps you inside essay limits, meta descriptions and social media posts. The Reading & Speaking Time Estimator tells you how long a speech will run. Before you publish, run your draft through the Readability Score, the Passive Voice Detector, the Filler Word Remover and the Homophone Checker, which catches their/there/they're slips. The Duplicate Word Finder spots the "the the" your eyes skip over.

Tidying pasted text is just as quick. The Case Converter fixes ACCIDENTAL CAPS LOCK in one click. The Whitespace Trimmer and Line-Break Remover clean up text copied from PDFs and emails. Find & Replace supports full regular expressions, and Bulk Find & Replace applies the same change to many separate texts at once. To compare versions, Text Diff shows changes line by line and the Edit Distance tool shows them letter by letter.

Developers will find the Programming Case Converter (camelCase, snake_case, CONSTANT_CASE), Slugify for clean URLs, the Byte vs Character Length Checker for database and API limits, and the Markdown to HTML Converter. For everyday admin there's the Mail-Merge Template Previewer, the Citation Generator for APA and MLA references, and the Text Redactor, which masks emails and phone numbers before you share a document.

Then there are the fun ones: Text to Flashcards for revision, the Rhyme Finder, Anagram and Palindrome checkers, a Pig Latin Translator, the SMS Text-Speak Explainer for decoding a teenager's messages, and the Paranoid Text Checker for hunting hidden messages. Every tool runs in your browser, so nothing you paste is uploaded.

Questions and answers

Why do the Word & Character Counter and the Byte vs Character Length Checker give different numbers?
The Word & Character Counter counts characters the way you'd count them by eye. The Byte Length Checker shows how much space the text takes up in UTF-8. Plain English letters take 1 byte each, but accented letters, other alphabets and emoji take 2 to 4 bytes. If a database column, text message or API limits you in bytes, the byte figure is the one that matters.
When should I use Bulk Find & Replace instead of Find & Replace?
Find & Replace works on one block of text and supports regular expressions with capture groups, so it suits complex edits. Bulk Find & Replace takes several separate texts, divided by blank lines, and applies one plain-text change to all of them. It reports how many replacements it made and has a "whole word only" option, which is ideal for fixing the same mistake in a batch of emails or product descriptions.
What's the difference between Text Diff, Edit Distance and the Text Similarity Percentage Checker?
Text Diff compares two versions line by line and shows which lines were added or removed, which is best for documents and code. The Edit Distance tool works letter by letter on shorter text and counts the smallest number of single-character changes needed to turn one into the other. The Similarity Checker gives one overall percentage based on the words the two texts share, which is handy for a quick "how alike are these?" check.
Should I use the Case Converter or the Programming Case Converter?
Use the Case Converter for ordinary writing. It handles UPPER, lower, Title and Sentence case while keeping your line breaks and punctuation. The Programming Case Converter is for names in code: paste a phrase or an existing variable name and you get camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case, CONSTANT_CASE and Title Case at once, each with its own copy button.
Does a good readability score mean my writing has no problems?
Not on its own. The Readability Score measures sentence and word length, so it can't tell whether your sentences are vague or padded. Run the Passive Voice Detector to find sentences that hide who did what, and the Filler Word Remover to cut words like "basically" and "in order to". Together they give a much fuller picture than any single score.
