About this tool

This tool looks for a form of "to be" (is, are, was, were, been, being, be) sitting close to a past participle (e.g. "written", "given", "completed") — the classic signature of passive voice. It's a heuristic writing aid, the same way tools like Hemingway Editor or Grammarly flag passive voice, not a full grammatical parser, so it can occasionally miss a passive sentence or flag a borderline one. Use it as a prompt to review a sentence, not as a final verdict.

To convert a passive sentence to active voice, put the "doer" of the action at the front: "The report was written by the committee" becomes "The committee wrote the report."
