Clean up, compare and reshape any list in seconds
Lists turn up everywhere: guest lists, stock codes, email exports, keyword lists, playlists. They're rarely in the shape you need. Paste one in and the List Sorter puts it in alphabetical, numerical or length order. The Natural Sort Alphabetizer puts "Item 2" before "Item 10" and can file "The Beatles" under B. The Duplicate Remover strips repeats in one pass, and the Fuzzy Duplicate Finder catches the near-misses, like "Jon Smith" and "John Smith", that an exact match never would.
When you're working with two versions of something, the List Diff shows exactly what was added and removed. List Merge and List Set Operations find what's in both lists, either list, or only one. For spreadsheet exports, the Column Extractor, Dedupe by Key Column and Column Reorderer & Transposer work on delimited rows without opening Excel.
Need a list in a different format? Text to List splits a comma-separated line into items. The List Format Converter turns lines into bullets, numbered lists, JSON or HTML. The List to Sentence Converter writes "apples, pears and plums" for you, Oxford comma optional.
There's help for decisions and organising too. The Random Item Picker, Weighted Random Picker and List Shuffler handle raffles and draws. The Round-Robin Schedule Generator builds fixtures where everyone meets everyone once. The Ranked List Aggregator combines everyone's votes, and the Shopping List Consolidator merges the family's lists and adds up the quantities. Everything works in your browser, so private lists never leave your device.
Questions and answers
- What's the difference between List Merge and List Set Operations?
- Both compare two lists, but List Merge ignores capital letters ("Apple" and "apple" count as the same) and keeps the first spelling it sees. List Set Operations is case-sensitive and adds a "symmetric difference" option, which lists everything that appears in only one of the two lists. Use Merge for everyday lists and Set Operations when exact spelling matters, such as codes or IDs.
- Should I use the Duplicate Remover, Dedupe by Key Column or the Fuzzy Duplicate Finder?
- The Duplicate Remover deletes lines that are exactly the same. Dedupe by Key Column is for rows of data: it treats two rows as duplicates when one chosen column matches, such as an email address, even if the rest differs. The Fuzzy Duplicate Finder doesn't delete anything. It groups near-matches such as typos and spelling variants so you can decide what to keep.
- Why does the List Sorter put "Item 10" before "Item 2"?
- Alphabetical sorting compares text one character at a time, and "1" comes before "2", so "Item 10" sorts first. The Natural Sort Alphabetizer reads the numbers as numbers, so "Item 2" comes before "Item 10", and it can also ignore a leading "The", "A" or "An". For a column of plain numbers, use the List Sorter's numeric option.
- How is the Spintax Sentence Generator different from the Spintext List Expander?
- They read the same {option one|option two} templates. The Sentence Generator picks one random option from each group and gives you a single sentence, then a different one each time you click. The List Expander writes out every possible combination at once, so "{Hi|Hello} {Sam|Alex}" becomes four lines. Use the generator for varied one-off messages and the expander for full keyword or headline lists.
- When should I use the Weighted Random Picker instead of the Random Item Picker?
- The Random Item Picker gives every item the same chance, which is what you want for a fair raffle or a random name. The Weighted Random Picker lets you give some options a bigger chance than others, such as a prize wheel where the jackpot is rare. If you just want to put the whole list in a random order, use the List Shuffler.
