Size converters for clothes, shoes, rings, beds and screens bought from anywhere

Buying from a European or American shop, or ordering for someone else, means translating sizes that rarely line up as you’d expect. The Dress Size Converter covers UK, US, European, French, Italian, Australian and Japanese sizing with typical body measurements, and the T-Shirt & Top Size Converter matches letter sizes to chest measurements. For tailoring there are the Men’s Suit & Jacket Size Converter, which also gives the matching trouser size and jacket length, the Men’s Shirt Collar Size Converter and the Trouser & Waist Size Converter.

Where a measurement beats a label, the tools let you enter one. The Shoe Size Converter works from foot length using each system’s own definition, for adults and children, and the Ring Size Converter uses the ISO comparison table to turn a finger measurement in millimetres into UK letters, US numbers and European sizes. The International Bra Size Converter handles the cup letters that differ between countries after D, and suggests sister sizes and a starting size from your measurements. Smaller jobs are covered by the Hat Size Converter, Glove Size Converter, Belt Size Converter and the Children’s Clothing Size Converter, which goes by height as well as age.

Not everything is clothing. The Bed & Mattress Size Converter shows how UK, European, US and Australian beds compare, centimetre by centimetre, before you buy a mattress or sheets abroad. The Bike Frame Size Converter suggests road, mountain and hybrid frame sizes from your height and inside leg, and the TV & Screen Size Converter turns a diagonal into real width and height, the biggest screen that fits your space and a sensible viewing distance.

Questions and answers

Why does my shoe size change between brands?
Every system is defined by the length of the shoe’s last, but brands round to whole and half sizes differently and add different amounts of room. That’s why a men’s UK 8 can be a US 8½ in one brand and a US 9 in another. Your foot length in centimetres doesn’t change, so the Shoe Size Converter works from that, and if you’re between two sizes, go up.
Is a UK 34DD the same as a US 34DD?
Yes: band sizes are the same in both, and the cups match up to DD. After that they part company. A UK E is a US DDD (or F), a UK F is a US G, and a UK FF is a US H. European sizes use centimetre bands and go straight through the alphabet, so a UK 34F is an EU 75G. The International Bra Size Converter shows every system at once.
What’s the difference between a UK king and a US king bed?
A UK king is 150 × 200 cm, almost the same as a US queen (152 × 203 cm). A US king is 193 × 203 cm, which is wider than a UK super king (180 × 200 cm). European beds are named by width and nearly all 200 cm long. The Bed & Mattress Size Converter shows exactly how far apart any two sizes are.
Should I use the measurement or the size label to choose?
Use the measurement whenever you can. Labels vary by brand and country, while centimetres don’t. Most of these converters let you enter a body measurement, such as bust, chest, waist, head, hand, neck, finger or a child’s height, and they say when you fall between two sizes. The usual advice then is to go up.
How do I measure my ring size at home?
Wrap a thin strip of paper around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in millimetres. That’s the inner circumference, which is the international ring size. Or measure across the inside of a ring that already fits and multiply by 3.14. Measure late in the day, when fingers are largest, and go up a little for wide bands.
