Free everyday calculators for money, home and life

These calculators answer the sums that come up week to week, and they're built around how things work in the UK. The Fuel Cost Calculator works with miles per gallon and the pence-per-litre price on the forecourt sign. The VAT Calculator uses the 20% and 5% rates and shows why the VAT in a price is a sixth, not a fifth. The Salary Calculator converts pay between hourly, monthly and yearly figures and checks it against the National Living Wage. Out for a meal? The Split Bill Calculator shares out starters and the service charge fairly, and the Tip Calculator rounds everyone up to a tidy amount.

For bigger decisions, the Loan & Mortgage Calculator shows your balance year by year and how much overpaying would save, the Compound Interest Calculator shows savings growing with regular deposits and inflation, and the Savings Goal Calculator tells you what to put aside each month. Around the house, the Paint & Wallpaper Calculator works out which tins and how many rolls to buy, the Recipe Scaler resizes a recipe and turns cups into grams, and the Unit Price Calculator finds the best value on the supermarket shelf. Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Questions and answers

What's the difference between the Compound Interest Calculator and the Savings Goal Calculator?
They answer opposite questions. The Compound Interest Calculator starts from what you'll put in and shows what you'll end up with, year by year. The Savings Goal Calculator starts from the amount you want and tells you how much to save each month to reach it by a date, or how long it will take at the amount you can afford.
Should I use the Tip Calculator or the Split Bill Calculator?
Use the Tip Calculator when everyone is paying an equal share: enter the bill, the tip and the number of people. Use the Split Bill Calculator when people ordered different amounts, as it adds a fair share of anything you shared and divides the service charge in proportion to what each person had.
Why does the VAT Calculator say the VAT in £120 is £20, not £24?
Because the 20% was added to the price before VAT, not to the final price. £100 plus 20% is £120, so taking 20% off £120 gives the wrong answer. The VAT in a VAT-inclusive price at 20% is one sixth of it. The Percentage Calculator's reverse mode uses the same idea for any price rise or discount.
Does the Salary Calculator show my take-home pay?
No, it converts gross pay, before tax, between periods, and works out the full-time-equivalent salary for part-time hours. Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and student loan repayments are deducted from these amounts, so what reaches your bank account will be lower.
Do the money calculators work in other currencies?
Yes. They default to pounds, but each money calculator has a currency menu with euros, dollars, rupees or no symbol at all. Your choice is remembered in this browser and used across all of them. The sums are the same whatever the currency, though UK-specific guidance, such as VAT rates and the minimum wage check, applies only in pounds.
