VAT/Sales Tax Calculator
Add VAT to a price or take it out of a VAT-inclusive one, at the UK 20% and 5% rates or any other sales tax rate.
About this tool
The UK has three VAT rates: 20% standard for most goods and services, 5% reduced for things like home energy and children's car seats, and 0% for most food, books and children's clothes. To add VAT, multiply the net price by 1.2 at 20%. To find the VAT inside a price that already includes it, don't take 20% off: the VAT is one sixth of the gross price, so £120 including VAT is £100 plus £20 VAT.
The same sums work for sales tax or VAT anywhere, so enter any rate. Businesses must register for VAT once taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in a rolling 12 months; the VAT Threshold Tracker helps you keep an eye on that. This tool doesn't cover the Flat Rate Scheme or partial exemption, so check those with HMRC guidance or an accountant.
