A belt’s size is its length from the fold at the buckle to the middle hole. Most brands make it 2 inches more than your trouser waist, so W32 trousers take a 34-inch belt, labelled about 85 cm in Europe, where belts come in 5 cm steps.
To check with a belt you already own, measure from the buckle fold to the hole you use and take off 2 inches (5 cm). A belt in the right size fastens on the middle hole, leaving room to adjust either way.
