Standard Form/Scientific Notation Converter
Type any number, in ordinary, scientific or E notation, and see it in every form at once: standard form, E notation, engineering notation with SI prefixes, and as a full decimal.
About this tool
Scientific notation (called standard form in UK schools) writes a number as a value from 1 to under 10 multiplied by a power of ten: 6,420,000 is 6.42 × 10⁶ and 0.00042 is 4.2 × 10⁻⁴. Calculators and spreadsheets show the same thing as E notation, such as 6.42e6. Engineering notation only uses powers that are multiples of 3, which line up with SI prefixes such as k (kilo), M (mega), m (milli) and µ (micro).
You can type a number in any of these forms, including "× 10^", "x10^-3", superscript powers or a unicode minus sign, and commas are ignored. The conversion works on the digits themselves rather than on floating-point numbers, so very long or very small numbers keep every digit exactly. Choose a number of significant figures to round the result, which also pads with zeros where needed, so 5 to 3 significant figures shows as 5.00.
