About this tool

The mean is the total divided by how many numbers there are, the median is the middle value once they're sorted, and the mode is the value that appears most often (there may be several, or none if nothing repeats). The range is the gap between the smallest and largest values, while the interquartile range covers the middle half of the data, so it isn't thrown by one extreme value.

Standard deviation measures how spread out the numbers are. Use the sample figure (dividing by n − 1) when your numbers are a sample from a bigger group, which is the usual case, and the population figure (dividing by n) when you have every value; the sample one matches Excel's STDEV.S and the population one STDEV.P. Quartiles have more than one accepted method, so pick the one your course or software uses. Any value more than 1.5 × IQR beyond the quartiles is flagged as an outlier and drawn as a circle on the box plot. Your list is remembered on this device.
