UK and US jacket sizes are the chest measurement in inches, and Italian and other European sizes add 10, so a 40 Regular is a 50R. Suits sold as a set usually have a 6-inch “drop”, meaning the trousers are 6 inches smaller than the jacket: a 40 jacket comes with 34-inch trousers.
The letter after the size is the jacket length. Short suits people under about 5 ft 7 in (170 cm), Regular up to about 6 ft (183 cm) and Long above that. Shoulders are the hardest part to alter, so choose the size that fits there.
