About this tool

Since Brexit, a UK passport has to pass two tests to enter an EU country other than Ireland (and Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland): it must have been issued less than 10 years before the day you arrive, and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. Older UK passports could carry up to nine extra months from a renewal, so the 10-year rule can bite before the expiry date does.

Many countries outside Europe want 6 months’ validity, some counted from arrival and some from departure, and the USA only needs a British passport to be valid for the length of your stay. The rules change and some countries add conditions such as blank pages, so always check the entry requirements on GOV.UK’s foreign travel advice. Your dates are saved on this device.
