About this tool

Type or paste a location and the tool works out which format it’s in. Decimal degrees can be separated by a comma or a space, and degrees, minutes and seconds can use symbols, spaces or N, S, E and W before or after the numbers. Hemisphere letters let you give longitude first. Results include the OS grid reference for anywhere in Great Britain, UTM and MGRS (used by mountain rescue, the military and many GPS units), and the geohash and plus code formats used by apps and mapping services.

All the maths is done in your browser on the WGS84 ellipsoid that GPS uses. OS grid references are converted from GPS coordinates with the standard Helmert transformation, which is accurate to about 5 metres; Ordnance Survey’s OSTN15 model is needed for survey-grade accuracy. A shorter grid reference describes a square rather than a point (TQ 300 796 is a 100 m square), so the tool uses the centre of the square. UTM and MGRS cover 80°S to 84°N.
