About this tool
Change any box and the others follow. UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) splits the world into 60 zones, each 6° of longitude wide, and gives positions in metres east and north within the zone, which makes distances easy to measure on a map. MGRS, the Military Grid Reference System, is the same grid written with letters for the 100 km square, as used by NATO forces and many search and rescue teams. Most of Great Britain is in zone 30U, with the far west in 29U and East Anglia in 31U.
Conversions use the WGS84 ellipsoid with the Krüger series method, accurate to well under a millimetre, and include the standard exceptions where zone 32V is widened for south-west Norway and zones 31X to 37X are rearranged around Svalbard. In the southern hemisphere, northings start at 10,000 km at the equator so they’re never negative. UTM stops at 84°N and 80°S; the polar regions use the separate UPS system. Your last position is remembered on this device.
