About this tool

Instead of just ticking boxes for upper case, numbers and symbols, this checker estimates how many guesses a real attacker would need. Cracking tools don't try every combination in order: they start with lists of common passwords and words, add the usual tweaks (a capital first letter, @ for a, 0 for o, a number or ! on the end), and try keyboard runs like qwerty, sequences like 1234, repeated characters and years. So P@ssw0rd! ticks every box but is rated very weak, while a long, random-looking password scores highly even without symbols.

The result is shown in bits (each extra bit doubles the guesses needed) and as two cracking times: one for an offline attack after a website's password database has leaked, and one for guessing through a login page that limits attempts. It's an estimate: the checker can't know whether your words were chosen at random, and it doesn't compare against real breach lists. Nothing you type leaves your browser. For important accounts, a password manager generating long random passwords is the safest choice.
