Plain-English SQL Query Explainer
Paste a SQL query, and get a plain-English breakdown of what it does, clause by clause.
About this tool
Paste a query and each part is explained in plain English: what SELECT returns (with COUNT, SUM, AVG, MIN and MAX turned into words, and aliases noted), which tables it reads, what each kind of JOIN keeps, the WHERE and HAVING conditions (LIKE 'gift%' becomes "starts with gift", IN (…) becomes "is one of"), the grouping and the sort order. LIMIT, OFFSET and FETCH, UNION, INTERSECT and EXCEPT, and WITH (common table expressions) are covered too, as are INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE.
It also points out two common mistakes: an UPDATE or DELETE with no WHERE clause, which affects every row, and a LIMIT with no ORDER BY, which returns an unpredictable set of rows. Text inside quotes and subqueries inside brackets don't confuse it. It explains the shape of the query rather than checking it against your database, so it can't tell you whether a column actually exists.
