About this tool

The usual rule of thumb is 500 words a page single-spaced and 250 double-spaced, but the real figure depends a lot on the font: Times New Roman fits noticeably more on a page than Arial or Verdana at the same size. This estimate works it out from the page itself: the space inside the margins, the average width of characters in the chosen font, and the font's line height in Word. It also allows for the part-empty last line of each paragraph and any space after paragraphs.

Headings, lists, tables, pictures and page breaks all add pages, so treat the answer as a guide; the range shows where most documents of that length land. If your essay has a page limit, paste the text in for the most accurate count. Your settings are remembered on this device.
