About this tool

File extensions can lie: a renamed or re-wrapped file won’t always be what it claims. This tool reads the file’s own header and checks it against the signatures of WAV, MP3, AAC, M4A/MP4, OGG, FLAC, AIFF, CAF, WebM, WMA, AMR, 3GP, WavPack, APE and MIDI files, the same technique operating systems and media players use.

Where the header makes it easy, you also get detail: the encoding and bit depth of a WAV, or the bitrate and sample rate of an MP3’s first frame (and whether it’s variable bitrate). If your browser can play the audio, the sample rate, channels and duration are shown too. Nothing is uploaded.
