Explain This Document
A plain-English summary of a Word document's structure. Upload a .docx file to see its word count, estimated reading time, how many tables and embedded graphics it contains, and a heading outline showing how it's organised.
About this tool
Choose a Word .docx file and this explains what’s in it: how long it is, how long it takes to read (at 238 words a minute) or read aloud (at 130), how it’s structured, how readable it is, and the words it uses most. The heading outline comes from the document’s own heading styles, including renamed or translated ones, so text that’s just been made bold and large won’t appear in it.
The “Before you send it” panel flags things that travel with a file without being obvious on screen: tracked changes, comments, hidden text and the author and company names Word stores. The readability score is the Flesch reading ease, a rough guide based on sentence and word length rather than a judgement of the writing.
It reads .docx files only, not the older .doc format, PDFs or Google Docs (download those as .docx first). Everything happens in your browser and the file is never uploaded. To look inside an Excel workbook instead, use Explain This Spreadsheet.
