About this tool

Enter each shift’s start and finish times and any unpaid break; a finish time earlier than the start is treated as an overnight shift. Times can be rounded to 5, 6, 15 or 30 minutes, either to the nearest increment or always in the worker’s favour, and the table shows how much each day’s rounding added or took away, so you can see that it evens out. Decimal hours (7.75 rather than 7 h 45 m) are what most payroll systems need.

In the UK, rounding is lawful as long as it doesn’t leave someone paid below the National Minimum Wage for the hours they actually worked, and rounding that always favours the employer can lead to underpayment claims. The minimum wage from April 2026 is £12.71 an hour at 21 and over, £10.85 at 18 to 20, and £8.00 for 16 and 17-year-olds and apprentices in their first year; the tool checks your rate against the actual hours worked. Your timesheet is remembered on this device.
