Reference Letter Generator
Write an employment or character reference that is accurate, fair and useful: dates, role and relationship, specific strengths with examples, and whether you’d employ them again.
About this tool
In the UK, a reference must be true, accurate and fair, and not give a misleading impression, even if it doesn’t include everything. The courts have held that a referee can be liable to the person they’re writing about, as well as to the employer who relies on it. That is why many organisations give only a factual reference, confirming dates and job title, which this tool can write too.
For a fuller reference, give specific examples rather than general praise, describe the duties the person actually carried out, and only include what you can stand behind. A character reference describes the person’s qualities from personal rather than work knowledge, for example for a tenancy, a course or a court. The letter closes “Yours faithfully” when addressed “To whom it may concern”, or “Yours sincerely” to a named person. Your details are remembered on this device.
