About this tool

Candidates decide in seconds whether to read on, so the essentials come first: salary, hours, contract, location and working pattern. Adverts that show a salary get more applications. The person specification splits criteria into essential and desirable, so people who meet the essentials aren’t put off by a long wish list, which particularly deters women and under-represented groups from applying.

The Equality Act 2010 makes it unlawful to discriminate in recruitment, and wording can do that without meaning to: “young and energetic”, “recent graduate”, “native English speaker” or “salesman” can all exclude people because of age, race or sex. The tool flags common examples so you can reword them. It also adds a right-to-work line, as UK employers must check every new starter’s right to work before they start.
