On-costs are employer National Insurance (15% above £5,000 a year) and pension (at least 3%), so around 15–25% for typical salaries. 1,950 hours is 37.5 hours a week for 52 weeks, including paid holiday.

About this tool

A meeting’s cost is everyone’s time added together. The calculator turns each attendee’s salary into an hourly cost (salary ÷ paid hours a year), adds employer on-costs such as National Insurance and pension, and multiplies by the meeting length plus any preparation. For a meeting that repeats, the yearly figure is often the eye-opener: a weekly hour-long meeting for seven people can easily cost more than £10,000 a year.

This is the cost of salary time, not the value of the meeting; a good meeting can be worth far more than it costs. Use the figures to ask whether every attendee needs to be there, whether it could be shorter or less frequent, or whether an update could be sent in writing. Start the live meter at the beginning of a meeting to watch the cost tick up. Your inputs are remembered on this device.
