About this tool

A web app manifest tells browsers how to install your site as an app: its name, icons, colours and how it opens. Fill in the fields and copy or download the result, then link it from every page with the <head> tags shown underneath. Checks appear as you go for what browsers need before they'll offer to install: a name, 192 × 192 and 512 × 512 icons, and a display mode other than “browser”.

A maskable icon has extra padding around the logo so Android can crop it into a circle or other shape without cutting anything off. The id keeps the app recognised as the same app if you later change the start URL. Icons must be real image files on your site, as this tool writes the references but doesn't create the images. iPhones and iPads also use the apple-touch-icon link, so include a 180 × 180 PNG. Installing also needs HTTPS, and offline support needs a service worker, which the Service Worker Boilerplate Generator can create.
