Ring modulation multiplies your voice signal by a steady sine wave (the "carrier"). Mathematically this shifts the voice's frequencies up and down by the carrier frequency, breaking the normally harmonic relationships between them — which is exactly what makes the result sound metallic and robotic rather than just pitched differently. Lower carrier frequencies (20-50Hz) tend to sound more robotic; higher ones get buzzier and more alien.
