About this tool

Each ear hears a slightly different pure tone, one just below the base frequency and one just above it. The gap between them is the beat frequency, which your brain hears as a slow pulse even though neither tone pulses. This only works over headphones, since each ear needs its own channel.

A session glides the beat smoothly from the starting rate to the ending rate over the length you choose, for example from 12 Hz down to 6 Hz to wind down, with a gentle fade in and out. The beat ranges are popularly linked with different states (alpha around 8 to 13 Hz with relaxed alertness, theta around 4 to 8 Hz with drowsiness), though the scientific evidence for any effect is mixed. Keep the volume low.
