About this tool

BODMAS (or BIDMAS) is the order for working out a calculation: Brackets first, then Orders (powers and roots), then Division and Multiplication, then Addition and Subtraction. Division and multiplication have equal priority and are done left to right, and so are addition and subtraction. This tool shows each operation as it's done, so you can check your own working or see where a mistake crept in.

It follows the conventions maths teachers and calculators use: powers stack from the right, so 2^3^2 is 2^9 = 512; a minus sign in front applies after the power, so −3^2 = −9; and a number written next to a bracket means multiply, so 6 ÷ 2(1 + 2) = 9, worked left to right. You can type * or ×, / or ÷, use ^ for powers, and include functions such as sqrt(16), percentages and factorials (5!).
