About this tool

Each password is built from your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, the same source used to create encryption keys, and every character is equally likely. Passwords are made on your device, never sent anywhere and never saved; only your settings are remembered.

Strength is measured in bits: each extra bit doubles the number of guesses needed. A 16-character password from all four types has about 100 bits, far beyond any guessing attack. The time shown assumes an attacker has stolen a database and can try 10 billion guesses a second, which is realistic for a fast hash; a login page that limits attempts is millions of times slower to attack. Length matters more than symbols, so if a site rejects some symbols, untick them and add a few characters instead.

Use a different password for every account and keep them in a password manager. If you need something you can type or remember, the Diceware Passphrase Generator makes long passwords out of ordinary words.
