About this tool

Diceware picks each word at random from a list of 7,776 words, the number of ways five six-sided dice can land. Each word adds about 12.9 bits of randomness, so six words give about 77 bits: an attacker who knows you used this exact list still faces more than 200 million million million combinations. That’s about as strong as a 12-character password of random letters, numbers and symbols, and much easier to remember.

This tool uses the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s large wordlist, chosen to avoid words that are hard to spell, offensive or easily confused. The words are picked by your browser’s secure random generator and never leave your device. For a passphrase nobody else could ever know, choose “I’ll roll real dice”, roll five dice per word and type the numbers: the matching word is shown next to each roll. A few words in the list contain a hyphen, so choose a different separator if that would be confusing.

Use at least five words for online accounts and six or more for a password manager’s master password. The capitals, number and symbol options exist only to satisfy fussy password rules; the strength comes from the number of words. Your settings are remembered; passphrases never are.
