What Needs to Happen

Work out how many points your team needs to be certain of finishing above a rival, whether it’s still possible at all, and what difference the game between you makes.

About this tool

To be certain of finishing above a rival, your final total has to beat the most they could possibly get, which is their current points plus a win from every game they have left. The calculator works out how many more points that takes, gives you an example set of results, and tells you if it's out of your hands or already impossible.

If the two teams still play each other, that game matters twice: a point for one side is a point the other can't take. Enter how many of those games are left (they count in both teams' games left) and the calculator works through every possible result. Finishing level goes to goal difference in English leagues, so a point less can be enough. Use it for the title race, play-off places, relegation battles or your Sunday league.
