Microphone Decibel Meter
A live relative volume meter for your microphone input, with a peak-hold reading — see the important caveat below on what this can and can't tell you.
About this tool
This is not a calibrated sound-level meter. A real decibel (SPL) reading needs a microphone calibrated against a known physical reference, which a browser has no access to — different devices' microphones have very different sensitivity and automatic gain control, so the same real-world sound can show a very different number on different phones or laptops. What this actually shows is the signal level relative to the loudest the microphone can register (dBFS), which is genuinely useful for comparing "louder" and "quieter" moments on the same device in the same session, but should not be read as a true acoustic measurement, and definitely not compared across different devices or relied on for anything safety-related.
Levels are shown in dBFS (decibels relative to the loudest level the microphone input can record), so 0 is the maximum and quieter sounds are negative. Automatic gain control is switched off so the meter isn’t constantly pulled back to a “normal” level. Press Stop listening to release the microphone.
