Incident Journal

A private, encrypted day-by-day journal for recording harassment, bullying or abuse at work or at home, or simply as an everyday diary. Everything is encrypted with a passphrase only you know, nothing leaves this browser, and you can export a dated report when you need to show someone.

About this tool

Incident Journal is a day-by-day diary in which everything, including photos, is encrypted on your device (AES-256-GCM, with the key derived from your passphrase using 600,000 rounds of PBKDF2) before it’s saved in this browser. It’s designed so you can document harassment, bullying or abuse at work or at home as it happens: dates, what was said, who was there, and photos. It works just as well as an everyday private diary, an equipment-fault log or a neighbourhood diary.

Each day’s entry can be written and edited only on that day, so the journal reads as a record made at the time. Once a day has passed its entry is fixed, but you can add late notes to it: each is stamped with when you added it, and the original stays exactly as it was. That is how a careful contemporaneous record works, and it is what an employer, tribunal or the police will expect to see. The journal locks itself after five minutes without activity or as soon as you switch to another tab.

Marking people, places and topics

Type a marker, or tap its button, followed by a word in CamelCase, and it is shown neatly spaced. The journal remembers every one you’ve used and suggests them as you type.

Six companion tools (Search, Tags, Actions, Questions, People and Laws) let you browse your journal by each marker and spot patterns, such as which people and places come up together or which actions keep repeating. They open the same encrypted journal with the same passphrase and can’t change it.

What happens if I forget my passphrase?
Your journal can’t be recovered. Nobody, including this site, stores your passphrase or a way to get round it. Keep an encrypted backup and a passphrase you won’t forget.
Can I write about something that happened yesterday?
Yes. Open that day and add a late note: it’s saved with the date and time you wrote it, so the record stays honest about when it was made.
Where is my data stored?
In this browser’s IndexedDB storage, on this device only. If you clear this site’s data, or use a different browser or device, your journal won’t be there unless you restore a backup.
Is the report safe to send?
The report is a normal, readable web page you can print or save as a PDF. It isn’t encrypted, so only share it with people you trust, and delete copies you no longer need.
If I’m in danger, who can help?
If you are in immediate danger, call 999. For domestic abuse support, the National Domestic Abuse Helpline is free and open 24 hours on 0808 2000 247. For problems at work, Acas offers free, confidential advice on 0300 123 1100.
