Encrypted Offline Notepad

A notepad for private documents: everything is encrypted with a passphrase you choose before it’s saved in this browser, it locks itself when you step away, and nothing ever goes online.

About this tool

Each document is encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM, using a key derived from your passphrase with 600,000 rounds of PBKDF2, before it’s written to this browser’s storage. Titles are encrypted too, so someone with access to this computer sees only scrambled data. The passphrase is never stored: the first time, you type it twice, and after that it’s needed to unlock. The notepad locks itself after ten minutes without activity, and clears what it decrypted from memory.

Because only you hold the passphrase, there is no way to reset it. Download an encrypted backup now and then: it stays encrypted, so it’s safe to keep in cloud storage or on a USB stick, and can only be restored here with the same passphrase. Exporting a single document as a .txt file gives you a normal, readable copy, so treat that with care. Notes made in older versions of this tool are upgraded to the stronger encryption automatically when you unlock them.
