Scale Finder
Pick a root note and a scale or mode to see and hear every note, correctly spelled, with its scale degree and key signature.
About this tool
Scales are built from a fixed pattern of steps above the root, and each note is spelled by letter, the way it appears in sheet music: every letter is used once in a seven-note scale, so F major has B♭ rather than A♯, and E♭ minor has C♭ rather than B. The small numbers show each note’s scale degree compared with the major scale, so ♭3 and ♭7 mark the notes that make a scale sound minor or bluesy.
For major and minor scales the key signature is shown too. A few roots, such as G♯ major or D♭ minor, need double sharps or flats; in practice musicians write those as A♭ major and C♯ minor instead, and the tool points this out. Press play to hear the scale up and back down.
