About this tool

Swim pace is usually given per 100 metres (or 100 yards in a yard pool): a 400 in 8 minutes is 2:00 per 100. The table projects that pace to other distances, including sprint, Olympic, 70.3 and Ironman triathlon swims, though most swimmers are a few seconds per 100 slower over longer distances.

Critical Swim Speed comes from two time trials, a 400 and a 200 (rest well between them): CSS pace per 100 = (400 time − 200 time) ÷ 2. It’s close to the pace you could hold for about half an hour and is used to set training sets: a few seconds slower for endurance work, a few seconds faster for hard intervals.
