About this tool

An acceptable use policy is the rulebook for your service: what people mustn’t post or do, how others can report it, and what you’ll do about it. It works alongside your terms of service, which should say that breaking this policy is a breach of the terms. Pick the rules that fit, from illegal content and harassment to scraping, AI training and fair use of an API, and the wording adapts to whether you run a website, a community, software or an API.

If users can post content that others see, or you run a search service, the Online Safety Act 2023 applies even to small UK services: you must assess the risk of illegal content, have an easy way to report it and act quickly when you find it, and explain all this in your terms. Services likely to be used by children have extra duties. Ofcom’s codes explain what that means in practice. Anything in [square brackets] still needs your details, and your answers are remembered on this device.
