About this tool

A bounding box is the rectangle of latitudes and longitudes that encloses an area, used to limit map views, database searches and API requests (“find everything in this box”). Around a point, the box is just big enough to contain the whole circle. East and west of the centre, the edges are pushed out to where the circle is widest, which is a little more than the radius at the centre’s own latitude.

The order of numbers is the most common source of bugs. GeoJSON, OpenStreetMap and Mapbox use west, south, east, north (x before y); Overpass and Leaflet use south, west, north, east. For a list of points, the tool finds the smallest box, so points either side of the 180° line give a narrow box across the Pacific rather than one spanning the whole world, and it warns you when a box wraps like that.
