About this tool

From 6 April 2026 HMRC's approved mileage rate for cars and vans is 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year (up from 45p) and 25p after that. Motorcycles stay at 24p and bicycles at 20p, whatever the mileage, and an employer can pay up to 5p a mile more for each colleague you carry on the same business trip. The 10,000-mile band counts all your business miles in the tax year, so enter the miles you've already claimed when working out a single trip.

Use Whole tax year if you drive your own vehicle for work and your employer pays a lower rate, or nothing. You can claim tax relief on the difference, called Mileage Allowance Relief, through your tax return or HMRC's online claim. If they pay more than the approved rate, the extra is taxable. Self-employed people using simplified expenses claim the same rates instead of actual running costs. Commuting to your usual workplace doesn't count as business mileage.
