Heading Structure Checker
Paste a page’s HTML to see its heading outline and catch skipped levels, empty headings and a missing or repeated h1.
About this tool
Headings are how many screen reader users find their way around a page: they jump from heading to heading the way sighted people scan bold titles. That works best when the levels form a tidy outline, with one h1 for the page title, h2s for main sections and h3s inside those, never skipping a level on the way down. Going back up, from an h4 to an h2, is fine.
The outline is indented by level and shows each heading's text. The checker flags levels that jump (h2 straight to h4), empty headings, a page with no h1 or a second h1, and role="heading" without aria-level. Headings hidden with hidden or display:none are left out, as they are for screen readers. Choose levels by structure, not by how big you want the text to look: that's a job for CSS.
