Reading Level Checker (WCAG)
Paste some text to score how easy it is to read: Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch–Kincaid grade, Gunning Fog and a UK reading age, with the longest sentences picked out.
About this tool
All these scores come from two things: how long your sentences are and how many syllables your words have. Flesch Reading Ease runs from 0 to 100, where 60 to 70 is plain English and anything above 70 is easy; Flesch–Kincaid turns the same measures into a US school grade, which plus five gives a rough reading age; and Gunning Fog counts words of three or more syllables. Sentences over 25 words are listed so you can split them.
WCAG 3.1.5 (Level AAA) asks that text needing more than a lower-secondary reading level has a simpler summary or version, and a grade of 9 or below (reading age around 14) is the usual reading of that. GOV.UK aims for a reading age of 9. Syllables are counted by rule, so expect small differences from other tools, and remember no formula can tell whether your words are familiar or your meaning is clear: test with real readers too.
