About this tool

Average basket value (also called average transaction value) is simply your total sales divided by the number of transactions in the same period. It's one of the most-watched retail KPIs because it's affected by both pricing and how well staff cross-sell or upsell — a rising average basket value usually means customers are buying more per visit, not just that more customers are visiting. If you also track total items sold, this tool works out the average number of items per basket too, which helps separate "customers buying more things" from "customers buying pricier things".

What period should I use for total sales and transactions?
Any period works as long as both figures cover the same window — a single day, a week, or a month will all give a valid average basket value for that period.
Why would I want to track items per basket as well as basket value?
A rising basket value with a flat items-per-basket figure suggests customers are buying pricier items, while a rising items-per-basket figure suggests better cross-selling or bundle deals — the two metrics together tell a fuller story than either alone.
Does this account for returns or refunds?
No — enter net sales and net transaction counts if you want the average to reflect returns, since this tool simply divides whatever totals you provide.
